ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As Principal Engineer of HMI Interaction Design, Alex played a central role in shaping the Lotus Emira’s Human–Machine Interface from concept to production. The project marked a first for the brand — introducing a digital touchscreen centre stack display to a Lotus for the very first time.
His responsibilities spanned user experience strategy, interaction design, and hands-on UI work for the centre stack display, collaborating closely with the lead UI designer to ensure visual alignment across the system. He also created the UX specifications and supporting documentation that guided suppliers through implementation and validation.

APPROACH AND COLLABORATION
With no over-the-air updates planned, the team’s challenge was to design an interface that would stand the test of time — intuitive, elegant, and unmistakably Lotus. Every interaction was refined to balance simplicity, performance, and brand character.
Alex worked across disciplines — collaborating with executives, design, engineers, and suppliers to align usability with technical requirements. Strong relationships across departments ensured design intent was preserved through to production. He also supported post-launch maintenance, addressing regulatory updates and refinements to uphold Lotus’ standards of design quality and attention to detail.

FINAL NOTES
This project marked a major milestone in Alex’s career, being his first automotive programme and one that provided end-to-end exposure from concept through to production. Over the course of the Emira’s development, he became the key point of contact within the business for all HMI-related activities, developing an in-depth understanding of the car’s systems and architecture.
Working closely with suppliers through both creative and challenging phases strengthened his ability to manage complex relationships and maintain design intent under pressure. When new regulations emerged late in the programme, Alex adapted quickly—implementing necessary updates to ensure compliance and gaining valuable insight into the homologation process.
Beyond design delivery, the project highlighted the importance of collaboration with diverse function owners and stakeholders across the organisation. Seeing the product evolve from concept to production offered a wealth of experience and shaped Alex’s continued approach to building intuitive, compliant, and enduring HMI systems.
